We've gotten great feedback, but we still want to hear from you! Please take a few minutes to fill out our survey. This information will help us in our fight to protect the Keys. |
Here's what we've heard from our community so far: |
WE HEARD: You're passionate about our priorities |
Which issues are you most passionate about? |
We're fighting for what matters to you. Over half of respondents listed overdevelopment, water quality, and traffic/tourism as the priorities that they are most passionate about.
What we've been working on: Overdevelopment: We've been leading the charge to restore the development and conservation protections that expired this summer when the Big Pine & No Name Key Habitat Conservation Plan expired. We’ve been coordinating with County staff to propose strategies and actions to restore protections that have been in place for the last 20+ years. We also successfully worked with the County to protect County conservation lands when a proposed ordinance was going to open up protected habitat to development — an example of what we can accomplish when the community comes together and makes its priorities known.
Water Quality: We never let up on the City of Key West when they continued to stall water quality testing in Key West harbor. (Here's what we said in January and April). Last month, they finally agreed to fund it — and we’ll keep our eyes on them to make sure it happens. We’re also working with Friends of the Lower Keys to bring awareness and change to the shallow sewage injection well in Stock Island, which evidence suggests is actively polluting nearshore waters.
Traffic & Tourism Impacts: We're working with other local organizations to evaluate flaws in the methods used in Monroe County's 2026 traffic study. This study plays a huge role in whether more development will be permitted in the Florida Keys. We’re pushing for the study’s methods to be improved so that overdevelopment doesn’t continue to worsen traffic conditions. Last Stand and 20+ local organizations also successfully pushed for Monroe County to start scoping out a long-term infrastructure capacity study to make sure that we can handle the development that’s already coming — and so that we have unbiased, data-based information to use the next time there’s a push to allow even more development. We provided recommendations so that the study accurately reflects the growth that’s actually happening— not just the growth that was supposed to happen under ROGO.

WE HEARD: You want to get involved, but you're busy! |
Whether or not you want to volunteer, most of you said that "time" was the limiting factor for your involvement.
That's one of the issues Last Stand exists to address.
When working people and families are stretched thin, it's harder for the residents to follow everything that's going on, be a check and balance for local government, or show up to meetings when decisions about OUR future are being made.
We know that, and that's why we always make sure there's someone in the room representing the residents and environment of the Florida Keys.
When issues come up, we also produce action toolkits so you can quickly learn the facts about the issues, how they affect your life and the future, and how to take action. |
With your help, these toolkits got real results: |
